I read a great article yesterday over at I’m An Organizing Junkie about Laura’s donation station and how she makes it a habit to get things out of her home.

That got me to thinking about my “donation station”. Because I am a visual person it is not in a closet, but right by my front door where we hang our coats.

I must confess I didn’t set out for this to be a habit or a place to keep my donations. It just sort of happened out of necessity. ARC is a place I always donate to because they come and pick up your things and they pick up a variety of items that go to use right away for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. (You can read more about this great organization here.)

My Donation Station

They come every Tuesday and they would call me to see if I had anything. And invariably I would say yes, but forget to set the stuff together and put it out that morning.

That’s when I came up with the idea to always have a bag by the door ready to go. Because the bags are out in the open and by the door I can just grab them and place on my front porch on those Tuesday mornings.

Now I find myself just putting whatever I can’t wear or use in the bag. No more forgetting and I’m decluttering weekly. I also put Goodwill donations by the door too.

So it is very possible to form a habit, even by accident. Having the bag at the door is a constant reminder that I need to be purging. It is fun going around the house seeing what I can give away.

Do you have a donation station? If so I would love to hear about it. Leave your story in the comments below. Also check out I’m An Organizing Junkie’s post on her donation station. I’m sure you will get some great ideas from her as well.

Until next time…
